CSS Menus – 5 Key Ingredients

CSS menus offer a greatly expanded range of creative options to site designers. But the benefits to using CSS menus only begins with more expansive design flexibility. There are numerous additional benefits to using CSS menu-based navigation – benefits that will save you time and money in the development and management of all of your client sites.

5 Ingredients for an ideal CSS Menu

Because CSS design separates design elements from site text, changes to the look of a site can be made by swapping out one CSS template for another without changing the text. In addition:

1. CSS Menus better be Recyclable. A CSS menu is a template. Once created it can be used over and over, amortizing development costs with each site you design and build.

With a file folder full of CSS templates, you can adapt existing design elements, give them a different look and employ them on another site without any re-coding. Consider how much that will cut down on site development time and expense.

2. CSS Menus need to be Easily Customizable. Pick and click saves hours of expensive hand-coding. Client requested re-dos can be completed in minutes instead of hours. Change the background color, change the type font, the size whatever the request, fixes are fast using CSS Menus.

And, as you build your client base, expect satisfied clients to come back for updates and upgrades to their sites. These updates are simple and cost effective. They also deliver great margins on work for hire assignments.

3. CSS Menus Must be 100% SEO friendly. That makes site navigation readable to bots and menu text is given high priority in search engine algorithms. Sites show up faster in SE indices when CSS complaint menu technology is deployed.

4. CSS Menus should be Section 508 Compliant. Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 requires equal access to all non-classified information. There are also state regulations used by schools, public institutions, corporations, even restaurants and movie theaters.

5. CSS horizontal and CSS vertical flyouts and dropdown menus should be easily changeable for those with low vision, increasing font size and even background colors for easier accessibility. CSS menus are strongly advocated by the W3C in their site compliance rankings.

One other point. There’s an active, robust support community for CSS menu design and development. This means there’s plenty of access to good, reliable information from professionals who have already discovered the money-saving, money-making benefits of CSS menu modules.

What are the ways to create animation using CSS3

The launch of CSS3 was pinnacle to the current change in usage of CSS for developing web animations. Before which, people used resources such as Flash and JavaScript for designing and developing such animations, which includes animated images. There were certain aspects to CSS3 that made creating animations through it so much easier and so much fun. Let’s have a brief look at these aspects now.
To begin with, there are two components – the « styles » and « keyframes ». These components make using CSS an apt option for developing animations. How they make it happen is as follows:
* A « style » describes the CSS animation.
* A « keyframe » indicates the flow of animation styles from beginning through the end.
Advantages of CSS3 Animations
The following three features are major advantages, which the CSS animations have over other traditional animation techniques (which are script-driven).
* CSS makes it easy to create simple animations; also, one would not need to have knowledge on JavaScript or similar tools to work with CSS.
* Unlike JavaScript animations, which runs poorly even the simple animations (when not well made), the CSS animations run really well even when the system’s under moderate load. This is made possible by the rendering engine, which utilizes frame-skipping techniques to maintain performance and smoothness.
* Having the browsers themselves control the flow of animations (such as animation refresh rates, etc), has lead to best performance optimization and smoother animation flow.
Creating the Animations
Creating a sequence of CSS animation involves using the style component to set the animation’s properties and sub-properties. You get to configure the duration and timing of the animation, along with details related to how the sequence of animation should progress. But, you do not get to configure the appearance of these animations using the style, for which purpose you will be using the @keyframes component.
CSS Style –
The following are the style properties & sub-properties
animation-delay: This helps configure the time delay between different elements of the loaded animation and the sequential animations.
animation-direction: This configuration sets the direction of individual animations, and also states if the particular animation will repeat itself in the same sequence or in a different direction on its consecutive runs.
animation-duration: Sets the time an animation would take to complete its single cycle.
animation-iteration-count: Sets the number of times an animation would repeat itself. If set to infinite, the animation would go on indefinitely.
animation-name: This specifies the at-rule name, which describes an animation’s keyframes.
animation-play-state: You can configure an animation’s pause/play status.
animation-timing-function: With this configuration, you can establish the acceleration curves of the animation, setting its keyframes transitions.
animation-fill-mode: This configures the values applied to an animation, (before & after it’s execution).
@keyframes –
As mentioned before, the keyframes allow you to configure the animation’s appearance. For this, you will need to setup at least two (at-rule) keyframes. These keyframes represent how individual elements of the animation render themselves within a set time frame.
This time frame is denoted by a « percentage » system by the keyframes. A 0% represents the start of an animation, and 100% represents the finish; they are given as from/0% and to/100% respectively. Though both these are optional, they are very important, and thus, the browser by default computes all the attributes of the animation and starts and finishes it accordingly, when the values are not provided.
The following are CSS3 animation examples, which should give you a brief understanding of how this works.
Example 1:
25% {
font-size: 200%;
margin-right: 75%;
width: 200%;
}
This example shows that at 25% of the animation, the header will have the right margin at 75%, with the width being 200%.
Example 2:
from {
margin-right: 100%;
width: 500%;
}
to {
margin-right: 0%;
width: 100%;
}
This example has two keyframes; first occurring at 0% and the second at 100% (by default, since the values aren’t provided); this effectively starts and finishes an animation. The right margin is at 100% with a width of 500% at the start of the animation, and ends at 0% of the right margin with 100% width. Therefore, the browser animates a header from left edge to the right edge.
With that, by including additional keyframes you can add intermediate steps and thus, amend the CSS3 animations as per your requirements.

What is CSS – Brief Introduction to Cascading Style Sheets

What is CSS – Brief Introduction to Cascading Style Sheets

HTML was originally designed as a simple way of presenting information, with the aesthetics of a web page being far less important than the content (and largely being left up to the web browser). Of course, now that the web has become as popular as it has, the presentation of your content has become almost critical to a site’s success. CSS is the key presentational technology that is used to design websites.

What are Stylesheets?

In the late ’90s, HTML coders noticed that they were retyping the same old tags again and again on the same page, leading to bigger HTML files and above all, time consumption and frustration. You may have found yourself in the same situation, adding in mountains of tags, despite wanting them all the same; or using tricks like invisible gifs for spacing.

Then, someone had a great idea: have one file that defines all the values that those piles of tags would have done, and then have all your pages checking this file and formatting your pages accordingly. You can therefore leave out most of the formatting tags in HTML and use only nice structural elements (like headings, paragraphs and links) – separating structure and presentation.

In late 1996 CSS (Cascading StyleSheets) became a reality, forged by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). Your stylesheet acts as a partner to your HTML code; taking care of all the layout, fonts, colours and overall look of your site.

If you ever decide to change the look of your site, you modify that one CSS file (your style sheet) and all the HTML pages reading from that file will display differently. This makes maintenance of your design much easier.

Benefits of CSS

Another of CSS’s boons is that you define things once, making it far more efficient than defining everything in HTML on every page. This means:

1) Pages download faster, sometimes by as much as 50%
2) You have to type less code, and your pages are shorter and neater.
3) The look of your site is kept consistent throughout all the pages that work off the same stylesheet.
4) Updating your design and general site maintenance are made much easier, and errors caused by editing multiple HTML pages occur far less often.

Well-authored CSS also improves the accessibility of web content, allowing access through myriad devices (handheld PDAs for example) and ensuring that web users with disabilities are still able to receive it. It also eliminates the need for browser-specific hacks and tags, which means your site has a better chance of working across all major browsers.

Initially vaguely intimidating, CSS is a well-designed, elegant language. It is hugely important for the future of web design, and has been pivotal in helping designers move away from the problematic, hack-ridden days of presentational HTML tags like , and allowed us to return to using logical, structural elements which make our sites more accessible.

All that, and there are dozens of powerful extra formatting options and possibilities available through stylesheet commands that are not possible through normal HTML. You’ll see these later on when we get on to things like backgrounds, spacing, layers and borders.

A History of Cascading Stylesheet

CSS, otherwise known as Cascading Style Sheets, has existed in one form or another ever since the 1970s. CSS is the ability to handle the design of numerous internet pages utilizing one file for font, tone, text and spacing and tremendously reduces the need for complicated code in HTML. Just before Cascading stylesheet, every font and text modification needed to be coded in line inside the Html page which produced lengthy and complicated HTML coded web pages. It also made transforming these webpages almost impossible as each webpage had to be altered and modified independently. With the creation and rendering of CSS, webpage layouts may be controlled via a single file.

CSS records, execution and types are managed by the WWW Consortium (W3C). The earliest rendering of Cascading stylesheet was called CSS 1 and carried out 1996. It landed having the ability to manage backgrounds including; attachments, videos, coloration, image, placement and repeat. It integrated the cabability to adjust boundary colour and width, font properties and text colors and spacing in addition to text, table, and image alignment. Programmers could also adjust the margin and border padding and add unique id and universal categories for groups of attributes. This meant that one file could control the complete layout of several webpages, preserving equally effort and time in developing and sustaining webpages on behalf of the developers and web site builders.

Sadly, Cascading stylesheet compatibility in web browsers was slow. The initial web browser to have limited support of Cascading stylesheet was Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 3 which was also launched in 1996. Other companies quickly introduced support for Cascading stylesheet 1 in their next software program releases. Companies that promised addition were Netscape, Adobe, SoftQuad and Grif. However, Opera was the first web browser to accept Cascading stylesheet compatibility and end up the pioneer in the growing technology. It wouldn’t be until March 2000 and the introduction of Internet Explorer 5 that Cascading stylesheet will be 99% working in a internet browser, and IE5 was the sole thoroughly compatible web browser at that time.

The next version of CSS, CSS 2 was published in 1998 and incorporated total, comparable and set placement of elements also the ability to provide concern to elements called the z-index in which a greater ranked component would normally appear over a lesser ranked feature. This allowed programmers to produce internet pages with multiple components and be assured that every component will exhibit in the correct area based on the thing that was contained in the specific webpage. It had been quickly followed by CSS 2.1 which didn’t add any other features. It just extended on Cascading stylesheet 2.

The last implementation of CSS was released this year and added modules such as Selectors, Namespaces, Color and Media Queries. These elements were designed and included to improve the features of Cascading stylesheet 2, and permit additional control over the specific components in the webpage for example voice control, rate and pitch array and the capability to collapse white-space. It’s also the most extensive and complete version of Cascading stylesheet thus far having the ability to handle 245 different web page components.

How to write a better CSS code?

CSS or cascading stylesheet can be written with different coding styles. A well organized and neat CSS code is a crucial feature of PSD to HTML conversion would make the process more efficient and cleaner. Well defined CSS code leads to lesser difficulty in managing or editing in the longer run. In this article, we would discuss the 10 tips or suggestions on how to write a better CSS code.

One line per rule

A problem for developers and programmers is to have multiple rules within a single line. Code efficiency is important as better coding leads to fast navigation and higher performance. The benefit to writing CSS code with a single line is to develop separate lines after lines of codes in the longer run. From a one line to a given code and separating lines better efficiency is gained for CSS.

Meaningful names for IDs and classes

Modifications and changes to a given ID or class so as to have a different CSS stylesheet necessarily requires a meaningful name. Meaningful names for IDs and classes increases the referencing for CSS. With the referencing for what the HTML stands for, the coder figures out and leads to an effective code.

Remain consistent

Changes to a coding pattern for the CSS code does not recover in the long run. With a CSS code one should remain consistent and steady with a code pattern. The coder must not opt for easy editing and choose to style the CSS with different lines of code as this can disrupt the code pattern and lead to imbalance.

CSS inheritance

The CSS inheritance is one of the numerous ways to gain reduction to CSS file size. The inheritance is called CSS, object oriented cascading style sheet. The CSS defines how to benefit when multiple style properties are similar within the child element of parent element, it is far better to have the definition for a parent element only.

Indentation

Another way of maintaining coding for CSS code is possible from indentation. From indentation a CSS code can be organized and neatly designed to be worked with later. The CSS coding is far relevant with an easier readable code and code identification between lines.

Shorthand CSS code

A shorthand code for making CSS code brings a fast speed to PSD to HTML concersionprocess. From the reduction in clutter, the CSS would be better and easier to manage. Applying shorthand CSS code is much better in clarifying the neatness and reducing objections to CSS writing speed. CSS code would be that much more cleaner from a shorthand CSS code.

Start with CSS reset

CSS resets are important for ensuring that the browsers display the items properly. CSS coding would become easier to get various browsers to display the layout as the same. Using the CSS resets would lend more credibility from having correct styled displays.

Splitting into multiple files

Where there are countless number of CSS lines it is better to separate CSS into multiple groups with multiple files. This indicates that the CSS coding is much easier and time saving from locating CSS code blocks instead of searching for one file with thousands of lines.

Comments

While doing PSD to HTML conversion, using a comment on CSS code would be better to manage and locating the code blocks effectively. Comments can neatly organize the code into similar elements and groups with simple comments can be defined. Searching, fixing and mailing with code groups can maintain and make easier the organizations to CSS code.

Separating hacks

The normal process of conditional elements and hacks is included within the CSS code. More importantly by keeping the hacks separate from style.css file would lead to hacks being not mixed with rest of code, edits and adjustments more easier. Managing CSS code is swift without affecting the main CSS code.
